We write extensively on Augmented Reality and Social TV on the Agora Media Group blog, being emerging and disruptive technologies (and also altered “behavior”) that have a bright future according to MIT and Gartner, to name a few.

Q: Where do these two mutually intersect?
A: On the level of two-screen solutions and applications/widgets.

Wikipedia says on two-screen solutions:

“Two-screen”, or “synchronous solutions”, are a form of interactive TV that enables information about a TV show to be accessed via the internet on a mobile phone, laptop or desktop PC. Unlike one-screen interactive TV solutions, where all of the interactivity is on the television, two-screen applications are typically done from a computer, and are free to the user. In these cases, users are not changing the content on the television, they are accessing supplementary information about the show. The difference between two-screens and normal web pages are the two-screens are relevant to the live programming, refreshed in real-time, and often provide social networking around live broadcasts.

Augmenting the TV experience in a one-screen solution is happening, sure, think of teletext or subtitles for instance.
But the augmentation is up to a certain level, due to the content and focus it has on that certain time.

Two-screen solutions on the other hand enable augmentating of the TV experience to a new level, where it comes into its own.
These kind of solutions are great for multitaskers and the information hungry society we live in.
Social complementary solutions which will connect you with friends and recommendations on the second screen, whilst consuming the core content via TV.
One can ask him-/herself if the TV content is primary or simply the reason for social activity.

The other intersection is with regard to the emerging TV applications and widgets which will enhance the core content on one screen.
there’s a learning curve though, simply cluttering the screen with additional information/widgets doesn’t work according to researcher Marie-José Montpetit at MIT’s Research Lab for Electronics on NewTeeVee.

Though the potential is present, a smart and enhanced usage and application of widgets is needed, to create and validate relevant and quality augmentation.
Almost anything can be an augmentation of the reality or experience, but as explained in Augmented Reality Semantics it has to be contextually qualitative and easy to use. Technologies are one thing, but if it’s not simple and powerful enough, users won’t adopt due to the high perceived risks.

On AppMarket.tv, we created the poll “ Two Screen or One Screen? What is the Future of Social TV?“.
Do let us know what you think is the future of Social TV.

This afternoon you can amaze yourself on the Dam Square in Amsterdam, seeing all kinds of odd characters through your iPhone or Android.
3D digital statues can be seen with the Layar application.

This afternoon, at exactly 14:00h (GMT+1), the Dam Square won’t be what it normally is, the Square will be taken over by people who explore the square by means of Augmented Reality, holding up phones and investigating their surroundings.
I do wonder what the expressions will be of people who don’t know about the Augmented Reality Flashmob?

This idea comes from Sander Veenhof:

“Every square in every major city in the world knows the ‘human statue’ phenomenon. On the Dam Square in Amsterdam Darth Vader, Superman, a Gladiator and some undecipherable sort of gothic characters colour the scene.“

Visit the website to install the appropriate software and such in order to be part of this AR event.
The procedure is as following:

PROCEDURE FOR SATURDAY THE 24TH:

- prepare your phone with the right software, see left column
- iPhone users can download and use the Layar app to activate the flashmob AR view
- downloadable ‘human sculpture’ models will be available for Android phones
- to bring your own 3D model, create obj/mtl files and put them on an Android phone
- to do so, get the AndAR application from the market (* on 23rd of April)
- AR tags on the ground will be provided

All use the #ARFlashMob hashtag!
Looking forward to comments and experiences this afternoon.

Tagwhat is a geo-centric mobile Augmented Reality application that by means of a social network, users can create and share content which can be seen on location.
Some of the opportunities -as can be seen in the video- are Local Businesses, keeping a journal, Videos, store locations and advertising.
Furthermore it’s possible to follow other people enabling a network of Augmented Reality tags.

<object classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" width="400" height="250 codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0">

Augmented Reality networks still have to validate their value, but novelty of such networks and the AR technology itself fuel initial interest of users.
A business model for Tagwhat is of course advertising which blends in with other types of tags, creating a less pushy advertising model. Besides this, context/location is key, making advertising more relevant and less disturbing.

Pre-conditions like the following make or break a social network:
*The amount of interaction between people.
*The amount of quality content/interaction between people.
*The amount of people.
*The amount of active people must be big enough, most people are passive, they like to sign up and read, but are not the content/interaction generators.
*The community must be relevant and specific to one or more segments, the more niche, the higher value added, but the fewer people and thus interaction.
*People need to make a choice.

The furthering fragmentation of the social network landscape will create increasing pressure on succession or failure. Augmented Reality has the power to uniquely position a platform in favor of its usage. It’s up to the users to adopt and integrate a network like Tagwhat in their daily lives.

Will such social Augmented Reality networks diffuse or not?
What could business models be for User Generated Content networks like these?

In a huge boost for Augmented Reality, Time Magazine recognizes the technology and has included it in it’s top ten technologies for 2010 – at number four. Many thanks to AR companies in the mobile space such as Netherlands-based Layar and US Wikitude, along with a number of high profile marketing campaigns using the technology, AR is becoming a serious technology and carving its way out of ‘Geekdom’ and into the Zeitgeist.

Conceptually, augmented reality isn’t anything new — if you’ve watched the Olympics or seen a first-down marker during a televised football game, you’re familiar with digital overlays enhancing real-life events. But one challenge for 2010 will be harnessing the growing ubiquity of webcams and smartphones to make augmented reality useful as a tool in day-to-day life. One of the best examples yet is the virtual box simulator from the U.S. Postal Service, which taps into your webcam to let you figure out what size box is needed to ship an an item through overlaying a semi-transparent 3D model of the box.

* * * * * * * * * * *
The paper mentioned in this post is reviewed and provided with comment by Gianluigi Cuccureddu to benefit this position paper for Mobile AR revenue streams.
* * * * * * * * * * *

A while back I wrote the article Complementing on Augmented Reality Business Models as a further elaboration on the efforts by Gary Hayes on this subject.
A new position paper has been published by Christine Perey -an industry analyst- for the Mobile AR Summit @MWC 2010 on the opportunities of revenue streams within Mobile Augmented Reality.

You can read the paper Where’s the Money? Mobile AR Revenue Streams on PDF.
For new technologies it is important and vital to have business cases and concrete revenue streams in order to take the technology and its opportunities to a mainstream adoption. It’s also needed to get the technology to the next phase of the Hype Cycle.
The paper distinguishes four kinds of sources, namely the Corporations, Small Businesses, Public Services and the End Users. For all the four sources there are revenue streams that can be tapped into when the applications are developed.
Where corporations benefit more from customized AR applications, the focus on small businesses, public services and end users will be on location, time and content (in relation to context).
For the sources mentioned in the paper, revenue streams are elaborated. What do you think of the revenue streams of corporations and end users?

I do believe here is where the power of Mobile AR will be shown. A flux of ubiquitous information requests (content) made relevant by interests (person), time and location (context).
Making sure these information requests are dynamic and only shown and offered when the need is there, will advance the coping of daily information overloads. This might not seem relevant at this point of time, but the real-time Web is just the beginning, and augmented information based on real-time streams will further increase information consumption and decrease information understanding.

One of the first and foremost challenges, put forth in the paper, is the distribution of revenues. Who is paying who, who is earning what?
This is important to keep the ecosystem ‘up and running’ without losing individual links due to a inbalance in monetary redistribution.
User Generated Content will add challenges to it, like UGC websites are already experiencing right now.

How do you think the Mobile AR relationships look like from a revenue distribution point of view?
What other revenue streams do you know which are not yet pointed out in the paper?

Microsoft presented their Augmented Reality mapping technology at TED.
Look at the video below, fantastic what it can do.

For me, three things strike out:
*The incorporation of Photosynth processes in their maps. Great way of including crowdsourced images in a natural way.
*The abilty to augment a location by use of the mobile phone camera and being able to see their real-time view superimposed on maps.
*The ability to look inside buildings due to the use of backpack cameras.

The information on Youtube says the following on this new and experimental way of applicating Augmented Reality:

Adidas Originals is launching the first Augmented Reality experience in footwear. The adidas Originals AR Game Pack is a set of 5 shoes, each printed with an AR code on the tongue. When you hold the code in front of your webcam, you’ll gain access to a virtual version of the adidas Originals Neighborhood. Each month between February and April, we’ll launch a new interactive game within the Neighborhood and your shoe will be the game controller. The experience launches on February 10th at http://www.adidas.com/originals

Great way to get attention and be an innovative brand!
It certainly is a fun way to use your shoes ‘slightly’ different than normal. The campaign behind is excellent, giving the Augmented Reality enabling also real meaning by using it as the game control and not solely as something which calls a digital superimposing.

Augmented Reality can be applicated in many situations, creating new, fun and innovative ways to bind customers, offering them a new experience.
What other examples can you give where AR is applicated like this?

Do share your experience with regard to Augmented Reality applications!

—————————
Marshal Kirkpatrick, the lead blogger for Read Write Web – one of the first tech blogs to dive into the fascinating field of augmented reality - is working on a research report about the use of AR for marketing.

In order to generate data for the report that best reflects the market reality – he has put together a survey.

In fact, he prepared two surveys: one for webcam-based AR applications, and a second for mobile AR applications.

Here’s Marshal’s message:

We hope that people in the industry will be interested in anonymously contributing their knowledge so we can all benefit from the aggregate results. The intended respondents for these surveys are people who have built or have hired other people to build AR apps. The intended readership of the results are people who are interested in hiring AR developers. We hope this information will help more people feel comfortable hiring AR developers, that more information will be good for the AR economy and the people who want to be a part of it. We’ll be sending the results out to everyone who participates, along with a discount code if you’d like to purchase the larger research report this will be a part of. If you’ve got any questions you can email me at marshall@readwriteweb.com Thanks for you time taking these surveys.

***

Expect a talk by Marshall about this initiative at this year’s most anticipated AR commercial Event - coincidentally titled the Augmented Reality Event, scheduled for Jun 2-3, 2010 in Santa Clara, California.

With a userbase big as Yahoo’s one, it’s a logic result that Yahoo is figuring out how to leverage its users to create an Augmented Reality application which differs a bit from others.
Instead of tagging pictures to a geolocation, Yahoo’s goes social by making it possible to leave notes on specific surroundings, which can be read by the user’s network.

Read here the patent which is filed by Yahoo. Read up the detailed decriptions, some interesting notes are made.
The abstract:

Disclosed are methods and apparatus for capturing information that is pertinent to physical surroundings with respect to a device, the information including at least one of visual information or audio information. Overlay information for use in generating a transparent overlay via the device is obtained using at least a portion of the captured information. The transparent overlay is then superimposed via the device using the overlay information, wherein the transparent overlay provides one or more transparent images that are pertinent to and in correlation with the physical surroundings.

There are many Augmented Reality applictions developed or in development, the potential application by Yahoo differs in terms of existing userbase and possible mass adoption. The social aspect might drive adoption, being able to identify oneself faster with overlaying data, than any kind of data which is not close to someone.

Would this move make sense by Yahoo?
